Jana & Patricia July 25, 2017
I have been shooting weddings for over 18 years now. As celebrations they are ever changing, and somehow stay the same at their core. I am starting to take on many more couples as clients who have children and are combining families, and Jana and Trish are also my first same sex couple to be doing this. Aside from the newness of two brides, two white dresses, (well, five if you count their daughters in the mix as well) and not a groomsman to be seen for miles, there was another first for me. Photographer Kate had to remind herself not get caught up in the newness of posing two brides instead of one. Instead I just needed to do what I always do, and just find the love. And then, bam, I found it. There it is when they look at each other. Trish’s face comes alive when Jana leans into her with intensity, and Jana’s exudes confidence when she knows Trish’s eyes are on her. I don’t think I’ve taken more “just take a breath and look at each other” shots than I have with these two. The confidence in how they are with each other, and the level of intimacy they were willing to share in front of my camera, what a privilege to be a part of that. Ladies, I don’t know if the choice to decorate your cake with butterflies was an intentional nod to change, growth, or metamorphose, but it’s clear to me that each of you is transformed when the other’s hand is in yours.
